Lake Como

Wednesday 17 to Friday 19 September

We finished our 2008 tour on Lake Como, 45°49′0″N 9°5′0″E.

Travel options from Slovenia to Italy were limited. We had taken a train from Bled in Slovenia via Villach in Austria then to Verona via Venice in Italy and picked up a hire car to drive the last 200km. It was a long day – we were on the train at 9am, arrived in Verona at 2:45pm and in Como at 6:00pm. No wonder Bruce enjoyed his Spaghetti Marinara that evening!

We took the opportunity to drive around Lake Como, well at least as far as Bellagio for lunch. We took the ferry across the lake to Cadenabbia. The roads are narrow and winding, often passing through villages with inches to spare on either side. The 60km return trip was very slow.

We arrived back in Como in time for a little more exploring of the city before enjoying our last night in Europe.

It was a pleasant 50km run to Malpensa Airport for the long flight home. We were once again entertained by the ‘girls’ standing by the side of the road offering their services. It’s the same the whole world over.’
