A Truely Polish Holiday

Thursday 27 to Friday 28 July

We booked the Apartment Konopnicka in Augustów. The town is set in the Lake District of Poland in the north east of Poland and is a popular holiday destination

Our apartment was about 800m from the town centre in a soviet block of flats. Our host had bought and decorated the apartment as an investment, hoping to rent it out in this popular holiday town. What an experience! The apartment was tiny but had a kitchen, bedroom, lounge and bathroom. Everything was comfortable and decorated to suit the Soviet style.  And the internet was good.

We walked along the Netta River that fed into a lake. A family of swans entertained us, willows hung over the water, a few people were fishing, others on paddelos. A lovely place.

We really wanted to choose a restaurant overlooking the river. The first option served pizzas on paper plates – nah. The second option was a little more upmarket, but all the tables were reserved. The wait staff took pity on us and found us a small table towards the back of the outdoor area. It was a very pleasant low key night.

There was a small supermarket next to our apartment and a bread shop underneath, so breakfast was easy to manage.

As we drove out of town we found a rather disturbing memorial to local resistance fighters who were slaughtered in The Augustów Round-up in July 1945 by forces of the Red Army, near where the presumed mass graves are.

And we found a coffee before we left Poland.
